What has been happening ?

 The Rural Forum

The Rural Forum now has some terms of reference.

The aim of the Forum is to bring together organisations from the public, private and voluntary/community sectors, and local residents, who are interested in working together to identify issues of common concern affecting rural communities across Telford and Wrekin and to develop and implement projects to  the benefit of Telford and Wrekin's rural communities.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The first Rural Forum took place on 17th Sept at Water's Upton Village Hall.
The event was well attended and the workshops gathered information about a number of rural issues.
Some of the information shared was
How Can We Work Better Together ?
The top 3 responses were
1. Communicate- using clear contact structures,use a concensus about what forum participants want and work together.
2. Resources- use local skills and knowledge to deliver services,pool resources,map volunteers and do a skills audit and identify possible funding.
3. Identify key priorities for actions-who needs to be involved,be creative and "think outside the box"
What Do We Want From a Rural Forum ?
1. Communication-not a talking shop,accountability,a strong rural voice,collective marketing, 2 way information.
2. Access to and engagement with expertise-sharing good practice and ideas to generate resources.
3. An opportunity to bring "like minded" people together.
What Are the Key Opportunities and Challenges in Rural Telford and Wrekin ?
1. Transport and traffic issues
2. Education provision issues
3. Planning and development of rural areas.
The top 3 issues from the above broad subjects were
1. A need for the representation of young people on the forum
2. A culture that rural residents "have to do it themselves" and urban areas get Council provision
3. The perception that crime and fear of crime are low level
 Some ideas about how to improve working together were
  • to research other rural fora
  • to use electronic technology to communicate.
  • to collate all activities available in all the village halls
  • to use Parish Councils  knowledge and expertise to get to know areas.
  • to share resources
  • to include a representative from each Parish/Town Council on the forum
  • to work together to apply for funding
  • to advocate a method of feedback from planners
  • to provide a central point for Telford and Wrekin Council to communicate relevant information.
  • to campaign about local rural issues
  • to hold local information which would serve the community e.g bus times etc.
The Top Priorities were
The development of web site links
The importance of using local knowledge.
The discovery of rural funding schemes for Telford and Wrekin.
