CVS RECEIVES LOTTERY FUNDING TO HELP VOLUNTARY & COMMUNITY GROUPS GENERATE INCOME THROUGH THE USE OF THE INTERNET
In a press release the Big Lottery announced:
BIG MILLIONS HELP WEST MIDS
CHARITIES GET TO GRIPS WITH CRUNCH
A BIG package of support totalling more than £5.4 million is on its way to help voluntary and community organisations in the West Midlands combat the economic crunch. The BIG Lottery Fund has announced the funding support from its BASIS programme (Building and Sustaining Infrastructure Support).
As the region’s voluntary and community sector (VCS) take on the challenges facing communities in the economic downturn, the funding will provide vital support in improving their efficiency and impact. The funding will be shared between 14 support projects across the region.
John Taylor, Big Lottery Fund Head of the West Midlands region, said: “At a time when the country faces one of the most difficult periods in decades, this funding will be critical in helping charities and voluntary groups cope with the strains of the economic downturn. More and more people are facing the hardship of the credit crunch, leaving many VCS organisations feeling the pressure of a high demand for services, while resources dwindle.
“The BASIS awards will strengthen the sector through a wide range of partnerships to provide expert, consistent and sustainable services, leaving the VCS well equipped to increase efficiency and maximise impact. This is particularly important within the current economic climate but also paves the way for a stronger charity sector throughout the region for many years to come.”
Today’s announcement sees a total of 119 projects across England receiving funding of £50 million to support third sector infrastructure either on a national or local level.

The "Mix and Match Funding" project will start on the 1st June 2009 and will support groups to get broadband access and to explore the opportunities of raising income via the Internet.
This could be for trading or building a website to recruit more members and potential donors.

CVS BECOMES LOCAL FUNDER FOR GRASSROOTS GRANTS
The 2008-2011 £130m Grassroots Grants scheme opens its doors to small voluntary and community groups in TELFORD & WREKIN.
The Government’s groundbreaking Grassroots Grants scheme declared itself open for business today and called on small local voluntary and community groups in TELFORD & WREKIN to come forward and get their hands on sums of money up to £ 5,000 of essential funding. Whether it’s helping local clubs get hold of new kit, coaching new volunteers or simply giving the village hall a fresh lick of paint, Grassroots Grants aim to make a real and immediate difference to the work of Telford & Wrekin’s small and local community groups.
Telford & Wrekin CVS has been awarded £ 66,627 this year to make grants from between £250 to £5,000 in a straightforward and easy way, to voluntary and community groups with annual incomes below £20,000.
Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector, said: “Telford & Wrekin is full of small groups and individuals who work tirelessly to tackle local problems and this £130 million fund is dedicated to supporting their efforts. Grassroots Grants will put essential cash in the hands of small local voluntary groups without all the paper work required for larger grants."
Alison Seabrooke, CDF Chief Executive said: “Grassroots Grants is exciting as it provides funding for community groups now and into the future. Grassroots Grants reaches out to grassroots groups which may have never even considered applying for grant funding before. Grassroots Grants is all about building a strong, independent third sector, and the Community Development Foundation is delighted to be administering such an innovative programme.”
The programme is funded by the Office of The Third Sector in the Cabinet Office and administered by the Community Development Foundation. Telford & Wrekin CVS is one of 68 local funders who will distribute grants directly over the upcoming years, selected because they are familiar with the needs and causes in the area.
